What is a Mini Truck?
A mini truck is basically a
smaller version of a pick-up
truck called a “keijidōsha” or
“kei” car. Keijidōsha translated
from Japanese means, “light
motor vehicle”. Kei cars are a
Japanese classification of small
vehicles which encompass a wide
range of categories including
trucks, sports, retro-styled,
convertibles, minivans, etc. All
Kei cars are manufactured to
comply to government set
regulations which dictate among
other things, physical size and
engine output. As you would
expect, these vehicles are
extremely reliable and
fuel-efficient. All major
Japanese manufactures have been
building Kei’s since the early
60’s for the Japanese domestic
market (JDM).
Who is Ontario Mini Trucks (OMT)?
Ontario Mini Truck is a new
subdivision of Haldimand Motors
Ltd. With fuel prices soaring,
the demand for smaller, more
fuel efficient trucks is ever
increasing. As such, Haldimand
Motors is importing these “new”
Japanese Mini Trucks into
Canada. In order for Haldimand
Motors to import these trucks
regulations state they must be
at least 15 years old. Although
this sounds old, Japan has a
much different transportation
model then North America. (

)
Why is the mileage so low on
these trucks and why are they in
such good shape?
Vehicles in Japan are driven
substantially less than their
North American counterparts --
on average, only between 4,000 -
5,000 kilometers per year
compared to 25,000 kilometers
per year, here. This is due to
the high costs associated with
driving a car in Japan and
population density. Unlike in
Canada, taxes and insurance
costs increase as a vehicle ages
and with the distance driven
each year. With that, Japan
boasts one of the world's most
efficient public transportation
systems.
What condition are these
trucks in?
Vehicles in Japan are
typically kept in very good
condition as such is the case
when they arrive here at
Haldimand Motors. In addition to

Who makes these Mini Trucks?
Mini trucks are produced by
all the leading manufacturers
including Honda, Subaru, Suzuki,
Mazda, and Mitsubishi. The
various manufactures make
slightly different variations of
mini trucks. All Japanese mini
trucks offer remarkable
performance. Both Subaru and
Mitsubishi mini trucks tend to
have larger cabs suited better
for taller and larger riders.
Suzuki & Mitsubishi mini trucks
typically have a greater ground
clearance. Lift kits are
available for all models of mini
trucks. Daihatsu (Made by
Toyota) and Honda have generally
the softest ride around. Subaru’
mini trucks are popular for
their rear-mounted engines.
What types of
gears/transmissions do these
Mini Trucks have?
Subaru mini trucks all have
5-speed + extra low gear
(6-speed) with electric-engaged
4WD and Honda mini trucks are
equipped with 5-speed, fulltime
4WD.
Japanese Kei Mini Trucks:
what does “Kei” mean?
Kei means “light weight” in
Japanese, which best describes
the highly efficient nature of
the Japanese Kei Mini Truck. In
recent years, Japanese
manufacturers have shortened the
name of the category “Kei-class”
trucks to simply “K-class.”
Japanese Kei Mini Trucks are
designed for the toughest
conditions in the Japanese
landscape, capable of hauling
loads on rough roads through
hills and turns.
What about parts?
Haldimand Motors has secured
a direct parts supply line and
will stock every part for each
model of mini truck we sell. We
are also committed to having parts
available long after the
warranty period is over.
